Sober Living

Courts are increasingly recognizing sober living as an effective way of dealing with drug and alcohol issues. Many drug offenders and those who get into trouble with the law because of their alcohol addiction are mandated by drug courts to participate in sober living programs, which are essentially rigorous yet nurturing programs that motivate people to stay sober and stay out of jail. This is a creative solution to keep offenders out of jail and give them the help and guidance they need to transform their lives and move in the right direction.

Constant support is a big part of sober living. The participant usually lives with other residents who are going through similar issues. There are strict ground rules, curfews and a zero tolerance policy on drugs and alcohol. Repeat violations may definitely result in a participant being expelled from the program. He or she will then face possible jail time. These programs also offer psychological counseling to help those who abuse drugs and alcohol get to the root of their problems and correct them. These sober living homes help participants get vocational and job training and even help them develop job-hunting skills so they are able to join the work force once they graduate from the sober living program.

Sober living environments are especially suited to repeat DUI offenders. Some unique aspects of these programs include participation in daily chores, planned activities such as group meetings and 12-step programs. Each participant is mandated to contribute to the household by performing the functions allocated to them. DUI offenders will also receive credit for fines and restitution by living and working in a sober living facility. For other offenders, days spent in sober living environments may also be credited to jail sentences.

For many individuals, these sober living environments can be a good and viable alternative to sitting in jail. Find out if you may qualify to participate in such programs.
